Did you know that during the winter, it’s recommended that you keep your thermostat set to 68°F when you’re awake and even lower when you’re away from the house or asleep?

If you want to make sure you’re practicing energy efficiency while staying comfortable during the coldest months of the year, then you’re in the right place for guidance.

In this brief article, we’ll cover the top tips for keeping warm so you can feel confident that you’re preparing for winter in the best (and most comfortable!) way possible.

    Let’s get to it.

    Schedule Heater Maintenance

First things first, you need to make sure that your heater will work properly once it gets very cold outside. When you’re preparing for winter weather, one of the most important things you can do is to schedule a maintenance appointment with an HVAC company.

They’ll come out to give your system a tune-up and make any recommendations on repairs if needed. This gives you peace of mind that your heater will work when you need it to. Learn more about everything an HVAC company can do for you here.

    Take Advantage of the Sun

If you live in an area that gets plenty of sun, even on cold days, make that work to your advantage! In the mornings, open the curtains around your home to let the sunlight stream in through your windows. This will make your home warmer, with no extra strain on your energy bill.

Just be sure to close the curtains before the sun sets to help keep the cold out.

    Bundle Up

One of the easiest tips on how to keep warm is to layer up, even when you’re at home. Throw on a comfortable sweatshirt and your favorite fuzzy socks or opt for a flannel shirt and indoor house slippers. The idea is to keep yourself warm, without getting sweaty, as that will eventually cool your body even more.

    Use a Space Heater

If you want to stay warm and toasty without turning on your whole heating system, consider getting a small space heater instead. You can move this with you from room to room so you stay warm no matter what you’re doing.

Just remember to never leave a space heater unattended and to always unplug it from the wall once you’re finished using it.

    Block Drafts Around Your Home

Did you know that you’re likely letting cold air into your home without even realizing it? Most homes have small cracks around the doors and windows from naturally settling over time. This allows cold air into your home, bringing the temperature down.

Use weather-stripping or caulk to seal up these cracks to help your home better maintain a comfortable temperature. You can also add removable plastic sheets to your windows to help insulate them during the winter months. Then, just take them down in the spring once it gets warmer.

Keeping Warm Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

After reading these tips on keeping warm, you’re more prepared than ever for winter! When the temperature starts to drop, remember to follow the guidelines here so you can stay comfortable.
