2020 influenced the working climate and how the aspirants plan for the different activities they expect would occur in 2021. Furthermore, the survey found that 14% of respondents lost their jobs last year.

Three out of 10 participants saw the pandemic as a means of learning new skills; this percentage has risen to 49.5% in small and medium-sized businesses. Also, 67.5% of professionals see learning as the path to enhancing prospects and expect to launch training programs in 2021. We cover this in more depth in Redefining Learning Support in the Digital Age.

In 2020, COVID-19 changed the business landscape entirely. In turn, it led to changes in job needs, where both employees and job seekers had to invest in new competencies. It ensures that they were prepared not just for today but also for a future that was changing forever.

Top hottest skills in demand – Professional preferences

    IT service management:

IT service management, most often associated with ITIL®, will undoubtedly play an essential role in recovery efforts. Organizational priorities will fluctuate in the months to come. It will be necessary to use a series of comprehensive best practices to support IT activities in line with corporate strategies.

Since organizations have remote employees, trained ITIL® professionals are instrumental in enhancing physically-disjoint team capacities and managing the entire IT lifecycle during this turbulent period.

This year ITIL Foundation certification is one of the world’s most successful credentials. IT experts with ITIL® and IT services management certifications gain four percent more than the United States average.

    Project management:

87% of IT decision-makers say skill differences pose a moderate to high risk for team goals. Therefore the planning of projects is more important than ever before.

Several roadblocks are preventing the completion of projects on schedule and budget. A project manager should be able to develop, communicate and implement a project plan. IT is judged, whether or not the projects succeed or fail.

At a time of widespread confusion, project management skills are required to assist teams in providing their employers with the right quality. Excellence in project management by ongoing training and development enables you to achieve this high-quality value consistently.

    AI and Machine Learning:

As organizations increasingly make data-based decisions using Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are still in high demand. AI and machine learning are used to find patterns and trends which people cannot see or process through conventional methods.

AI is also one of the primary skills for organizations that have slowed down because of the pandemic. Almost every business now has remote staff. You can use AI and machine learning for improving safety at endpoints, securing corporate network data and connected devices.

    Cybersecurity:

This year, cybersecurity is jumping to the top, primarily due to the pandemic. Because many companies have been forced to slow or reprioritize IT projects and investments, they need to think more about how they can restore their capabilities. A recent survey conducted by the International Data Corporation revealed that organizations, whether in the middle of an economic downturn or with sluggish development, prioritize cybersecurity skills.

Cybersecurity, particularly as budgets tighten, is an environment that you cannot avoid. In recent months our physical world has deteriorated significantly. However, the digital world is still a playground for Internet criminals who create new, complicated techniques to obtain sensitive information. Since the pandemic began, the number of attacks increased, with phishing emails rising by 667% since February.

As the frequency and ingenuity of cybersecurity breaches increase, cybersecurity professionals are in short supply with the right skills for defending the business, government, and military networks. With the global lack of cybersecurity experts, anyone who wants to face the challenge and develop advancing career skills has been created an on-demand sector.

    Career plans – 2021

Professionals are, however, stepping into a proactive approach for successful working life in 2021.

    • 35% of those surveyed saw the pandemic as an opportunity to acquire new qualifications; this figure increased to 49.5% amongst the SME workforce;
    • 67.5% of professionals consider learning as the key to improving prospects and expect to launch training programs in 2021
    • 4% of people believe their jobs are maintained depending on new abilities.
    • 66% of practitioners are enrolled or expect to get the start for training programs in 2021

Organizations have found that online learning is an essential part of employee skills and a vital part of employee participation in an increasingly virtual ecosystem. With universities moving internationally to the online model, online learning programs effectively promote continuity of learning.

A most effective way to start learning a new skill

Online learning is one of the most common methods of updating professional people with all of its advantages of learning anywhere and diverse learning preferences.

    • 71% agree that the best way to start learning today’s skills is by paying for online programs or self-learning through free online courses.
    • 72.8% of employees either examine what they want to learn in 2021 or have a clear intention to sign up for an online certification program.
    • Digital operations programs and technology were popular with early-career (30 years old and younger) learners.
    • Most students use the smartphone application for desktop-based programs.

    Value-add from online learning programs

    • The majority of the respondents prefer the bootcamp applied learning model associated with business needs.
    • 75% of professionals favor applied to learn programs, initiatives, and workshops combined with business collaborations and accreditations.

Both students and practitioners steadily pursue online learning, and employers and universities fully embrace this trend. Skills in the digital economy are essential for people as the basis of their solid careers and as a key resource for digital changes and long-term competitiveness for employers. In the end, upgrading and upskilling are the keys to a successful career in 2021 and future years.

    Endnote

New talent is needed in the digital economy as digitalization, automation, and other developments are changing the working environment. The modern expertise ranges from basic technology to digital, business, and soft skills. Firms take a 360-degree skills view. Skills like digital marketing and business skills like problem-solving, ideas, creativity, and interpersonal skills effectively collaborate in a virtual work environment.
