They say ‘health is wealth’. To put it honestly, health indeed is the biggest wealth you can have. if you are healthy, you will get the enthusiasm to do everything in the world. On the other hand, if your health does not permit you to do most of the things in your life, you will have a dull life. This is why we should take very good care of our health in every way possible. While doing so, we should also consider the fact that we may fall sick someday and the kind of measures that we should take at that point. This is why we should purchase a health insurance policy as soon as we become financially independent. If we need to be hospitalized, the health plan will pay for the expenses incurred in the treatment.
Nevertheless, as we talk about health insurance policies, not all of them are available at the most affordable prices. And if we are especially going for the privately-owned insurance companies, we are not likely to get an affordable plan. This is why we can also consider the national health insurance schemes in India.
A national health insurance policy is backed by the Government of India. These policies were launched with the aim of encouraging people to get healthcare facilities at an affordable cost. So, let us check out some of the national health insurance schemes in the country.
Ayushman Bharat Yojana
The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is one of the national health insurance plans in India which was launched in 2018. This was jointly funded by the Government of India and the particular State Governments. This scheme was for people whose income level was low.
The features of the plan:
- The plan provides coverage of INR 5 lakhs per family each year, and the medical treatment can be sought at either public or private hospitals
- Policyholders can get coverage for three days of pre-hospitalization costs and 15 days of post-hospitalization expenses
- Policyholders can also get reimbursement for expenses towards physician’s fees, room charges, supplies, surgeon charges, ICU charges, and many more
- The plan covers all pre-existing medical conditions
Central Government Health Scheme
This is also called CGHS and is one of the most popular health insurance schemes offered by the Government of the country to the Central Government employees, which also includes pensioners. The scheme was started in the year 1954 and included several highest-ranked officials of the government including Governors, Former High Court & Supreme Court Judges, Members of Parliament, Freedom Fighters, Journalists, and many more. Under this policy, the policyholders are eligible for cashless treatment at the pre-selected hospitals, diagnostic centers, wellness centers, etc.
Universal Health Insurance Scheme (UHIS)
Universal Health Insurance Scheme or UHIS was launched in the year 2003 and targeted the lower-income group people. This national health insurance scheme is for people who fall under the lower income group and it takes care of their medical expenses that are related to hospitalization. Along with paying the medical expenses of those people, the scheme also comes up with personal accident insurance that provides a lump sum amount to the family of the insured person, in case he/she passes away. This scheme is available in two options; individual and group plans. The premium rates will vary on the basis of the background of the policyholder, whether he/she falls under BPL or APL category.
