A pallet (also known by the term “skid”) is a flat transport vehicle that supports goods in a stable fashion. It can also be lifted by forklifts, front loaders, jacking devices, or an erect crane. A pallet is the structure of a single load that allows for efficient handling and storage.
Many times, goods or shipping containers can be placed on a pallet and secured with strapping. Since its invention in 1921, its use has significantly outperformed older forms such as the wooden container and the wooden barrel. It works well with modern packaging such corrugated containers and intermodal containers that are used for bulk shipping.
Pallets are mostly made from wood but can also be made from metal or plastic.

The static load bearing capacity is 3 short tons (2.7long tons; 2.5 t) and the dynamic capacity is 1.89-long-ton (0.91 t). Heavy models may weigh up 300 pounds (140kg). “Standard GMA can hold up 460 pounds (210kg). GMA pallets average 37 pounds (17kg) and stand 6+1/2 inches (170mm). Their deck boards measure 3+1/4 inch (83mm) wide by 5/16 inch (7.9mm), each. Other dimensions can be used to carry different weights.
The IPPC Pallets are 44 inches wide and 48 inches long. They weigh about 135lbs (61 kilograms) and are nominally 4 by 102 by 3 by 76 by 76 by 3 inches. The deck is fully covered with plywood of 30 mm (1.18in), and is painted blue in European and Russian nations.
These pallets are for heavy loads and general-purpose systems. They can be lifted best by their rigid stringers. These pallets are often heavier, stronger and more durable then two-way.
Pallet users require pallets that are easy to maneuver through buildings, can stack and fit into racks and be accessible to pallet lifts and palletjacks. Pallets should be carefully packed inside intermodal containers, vans and other transportable containers to avoid shipping air.
