Today, it has grown a lot; young people know how to handle themselves in this field much better than you and me; and they know how to watch their favorite teams and their games for free over the internet.
Are there different types of viewers that different platforms can share? Young people don’t have money to pay for television; adults are not used to watching sport through social channels. In terms of television rights, who do you think has the largest share of the market?
Young people do not want to pay, but they are very fanatical.
Adult people, those of my generation, are used to paying to watch sports on television, but it is clear that the ‘pay x view’ business is in danger because, little by little, it will have to adapt to the age of its consumers. Persuading young people to pay to watch sports is a big challenge. Without a doubt, the Premier League, but personally I would not invest in it because it is too expensive.
Who has control over the content?
Nowadays, if we talk about how the games are broadcast, the leagues are in control of the content. In the past, there was a different situation: the leagues sold the rights and the television stations that acquired them were in charge of production, but that is no longer the case. Now, the leagues want to produce their own images to have absolute control of what reaches the public. As a television, if you want to broadcast the UEFA Champions League, the Europe League, the European Championship or the qualifying phase, you must sign a contract of more than 50 pages in which it is perfectly specified what you can and what you cannot show.
Sports journalism, television and television rights
Since the 1936 Berlin Olympics, a change can be perceived in the European panorama with regard to interest in events, which is becoming more and more widespread. The appearance of television changed the sector and the experience of information consumption became massive, as Vega (2013) reflects: For the first time, what happened on the playing field could be seen by millions of people from all over the world. everyone at the same moment it happened (Vega, 2013, p. 74).
In relation to the advances of television in sports journalism,
milestones such as the broadcast by the BBC in 1954 of the World Cup or the annual Wimbledon competitions from 1954 to the sound of new technological advances would also be the birth of new studio competitions and the creation of new television channels. In the 1980s, the American company Classic Sport News was created, entirely dedicated to sports audiovisual content. It was followed by other variety channels where sports would also have a place, such as the ESPN channel, Sky, and its respective Sky Sports, or EuroSport, along with FOX, ABC or CBS; in Spain the autonomous televisions would be born, followed by Canal Plus (which already existed in France), Antena 3 and Telecinco The Spanish context Spaniards will not be able to see a moving image of a sporting event on television until El NO-DO would project summaries with the best plays and most interesting aspects of the League matches. Almost ten years later, in 1954, the League match between Real Madrid and Racing de Santander was broadcast and in 1957 TVE already broadcast some matches live. In these years, the links between TVE and Eurovision began to be used to broadcast international matches.
